Walking in Both Worlds as a Case Manager and Occupational Therapist
Working as an Occupational Therapist at Innovative Rehabilitation Systems has been such a rewarding experience. I have been with Innovative since 2021, but before that I spent four years working as a case manager in the Metro Detroit area with clients recovering from catastrophic auto accidents. That experience has shaped the way I approach my work today, giving me a unique perspective I rely on when collaborating with providers, supporting colleagues, and guiding patients through their recovery.
As a case manager, I became deeply familiar with the intricacies of coordinating care for patients with complex medical needs. I learned to navigate short and long term recovery journeys, built relationships with surgeons, physiatrists, and other specialists, and developed an understanding of their goals and expectations. This background helps me recognize when additional referrals such as neuropsychology, physical therapy, or vocational rehabilitation may benefit a patient. It also allows me to better anticipate the trajectory of recovery, identify potential barriers, and appreciate how different therapies and interventions complement one another.
Medication management is another area where my case management experience proves invaluable. I saw firsthand how lapses in medication access could affect a patient’s mood, pain, and participation in therapy. I became familiar with the role of third party pharmacies and the common delays patients encounter. Now, as an OT, I draw on that knowledge to anticipate potential barriers, educate patients, and collaborate with case managers to resolve issues quickly. Along with my OT colleagues, I assist with developing strategies to ensure patients inform case managers when medications will run out and report any side effects that may hinder recovery.
Perhaps the most valuable expertise I have from case management is my in depth knowledge of Michigan’s auto no fault insurance system. I understand what insurance carriers look for in documentation, particularly when demonstrating the medical necessity of services, home modifications, and equipment. I am mindful of the importance of clearly linking a patient’s injuries to their accident and providing thorough, timely records. This perspective not only strengthens my own documentation but also allows me to support colleagues and office staff in ensuring our records meet insurance standards. I also understand that denials sometimes occur despite clear documentation, and I am able to prepare patients for these challenges and help them navigate potential lapses in care.
Case management also gave me insight into the legal side of auto accidents, including first and third party lawsuits. Knowing the role attorneys play and how they rely on therapy notes and medical records has reinforced the importance of clarity and accuracy in documentation.
Because I know firsthand how demanding case management can be, I now approach collaboration with greater empathy. I support Case Managers by helping explain complex issues to patients and families, and I work with patients to better understand the barriers case managers face. This often improves communication, reduces frustration, and strengthens care coordination.
When I was a case manager, I often referred my clients to Innovative Rehabilitation Systems because of the compassion and quality of care provided. I knew my clients would never be treated as “just another number.” Now, as an OT at Innovative, I see those same values lived out every day. My case management experience not only enriches the care I provide but also helps me bring a broader perspective to our team and to the patients we serve.
